The First Law of Internet Marketing
by David Williams - October 2007
Newton’s First law of physics tells us
that, "…an object in motion tends to
stay in motion with the same speed and
in the same direction unless acted upon
by an unbalanced force." And this law
can (and should) be applied to your Internet
Marketing
efforts and Organic SEO campaigns.
Conversely, Newton also explains that,
'An object at rest, tends to remain at
rest..." So the choices are relatively
clear:
- Remain at rest
- Remain in motion
If you want to keep the forward
momentum going – you must continue to
apply some energy to counteract the
various
‘unbalanced forces’ that would hinder
your progress, search engine rankings
and sustained growth such as;
- competitive
websites,
- changes in the way people
search (search trends),
- changes in search technology (like
Universal Search)
- the industry, etc.
The Problem ~ Website Stagnation and
Spoilage
I don't mean to pick on anyone here. We
all get 'busy' and that is usually the
case for small business owners the world
over. We get so caught up in the
day-to-day activities of doing
business we have little or no time
left in the day to pursue activities
that will sustain our business.
Much like the mechanic who keeps his
customer's cars running like a top yet
fails to better maintain his own vehicle
I too, at times, can be just as slow as
the next small business owner when it
comes to better marketing and promoting
my services online.
But the truth of the matter is; even
well designed websites that deployed
good Organic SEO techniques and
ultimately ranked well in the search
engines will grow stagnant and spoil if
left unattended. What a terrible waste.
The Solution ~ Keep your Website Fresh
While stagnant websites will remain
stagnant in search engine results we
have learned over the years that
websites; with fresh content, that is
updated regularly, that is ethically
optimized and is on a growth curve ~
usually experience higher rankings in
search engine results than their
neglected counterparts.
With the unveiling of new technology
like Universal Search - this first law
of internet marketing becomes even more
critical to our sustainable growth. As
small business owners we need to be
proactive and forward thinking if we
hope to be in the game for the long run.
